3D Measurement, how it works ?

The operational procedure is very easy and can be broken down into 5 steps. It usually takes about 5 minutes between the time your photos are copied onto the hard disk and starting to take measurements.

1 - Firstly, you have to take a series of photos of the scene or the object to be measured. These photos must be taken from different angles and all the measurement points that you want to take must be visible on at least 2 photos. You must also make a real measurement (or know the distance) with a measuring instrument which will serve as a reference.

2 - Then, back at the office, copy the photos onto your hard disk, run Google SketchUp 6.
Load the photos... You can download the video 'Pixdim Presentation Video', which explains the procedure.

3 - Before taking measurements, you must indicate at least 8 characteristic points on the photos. These points allow Pixdim to calculate the 3D positions of the camera when the photos were taken.
During this phase, you can use some helpful tools (An automatic zoom allows you to position the points precisely, a special command allows you to readjust the points...)

4 - Finally, you must also indicate a real measured distance. This is to ensure correct measurement scale calibration on the photos.

5 - You can now run a 3D calculation. Once the position of the cameras and the 3D points have been determined by the software, you can make any 3D measurement that you wish. Just run a Google SketchUp 6 measurement command and pick the 3D points.
